Community Engagement
“Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.” ~ William James
The Dean of Students Office cultivates a community of belonging by connecting diverse students, alumni, faculty, and staff across all programs in shared service and engagement. The DOS office leads community-based projects, collaborates with student organizations, and sponsors activities that strengthen the WJC community while serving and supporting the surrounding communities.
Ways to Get Involved
Student Organizations
Many of our student groups are dedicated to social justice causes and serving the needs of various communities, including our Gero Volunteer Corps (GVC) and Rainbow Alliance group. To learn more about these groups and others, click here.
New Student Orientation
Every summer during our new student orientation programming in August, we engage in a community service project that serves a vital cause and helps incoming students to build new relationships with each other, faculty, and staff. A popular project has been filling backpacks with school supplies for children in need.
Days of Service
Every fall semester, usually during the month of November, the entire William James College community is invited to come together to participate in a community service project to benefit a local cause or organization. In years past we have collected and gift wrapped new and gently used books to donate to children living in a homeless shelter, created and mailed homemade greeting cards to hospitalized children, organized a voter registration table, and packed toiletry kits for veterans.
Share Your Ideas With Us
We would be interested to hear if WJC community members have any ideas or suggestions for a community service project idea. Please contact the Dean of Students at deanofstudents@williamjames.edu.
