The Trump administration ending a temporary residency permit program affecting thousands of Haitians
Associate professor and Haitian native, Gemima St. Louis, comments on President Trump’s administration’s decision to terminate the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program as a result of “considerable progress” made in the country since the devastating 2010 earthquake. “Repatriating these vulnerable children and families will cause significant disruptions to their lives and will have long-term negative impacts on their well-being,” she says of the negative effects on those who will be forced to leave the U.S. following this decision. Gemima explains to The Louisiana Weekly the truth behind the socioeconomic and geographical conditions of the country and gives an alternative approach to take for those who migrated here after their home was destroyed.
