WJC Faculty Member, Alum Co-Author Article on Meeting the Mental Health Needs of Veterans
Dr. Susan Powell, associate professor in the William James College Clinical Mental Health Counseling program, and alumnus Michael Mullen co-authored an article for The Advocate Magazine, a quarterly publication from the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA).
The article, titled ‘Understanding Military Culture and Veteran Identity,’ provides treatment approaches to assist Clinical Mental Health Counselors (CMHCs) who are working with military veterans and service-members.
“Clearly a need exists for civilian counselors to provide culturally competent services to veterans and military service members” wrote Powell and Mullen.
The article covers topics including diversity within the military, the process and struggles of reintegrating into the civilian world and with families, and the hesitation from many veterans to seek mental health services in general or specifically from civilian therapists.
Powell and Mullen also provided recommendations for CMHCs on body language, emotional reactions, terminology and more when treating veterans and service-members.
The full article is available to AMHCA members here.
