This course introduces students to the major theoretical models for understanding criminal behavior, including historical and contemporary perspectives. Evidence-based practices for mental health counseling with individuals involved in the criminal justice system are reviewed. The theoretical models and clinical practices are examined from a socio-cultural perspective.  Additional topics include violence risk assessment, mental health and substance use disorders within forensic populations, ethical considerations, and public policy issues.
