Class of 2024

Hi prospective students! My name is Julia Chilinski and I am from Storrs, Connecticut. I just moved to the Boston area this year for grad school and am loving it! I am a full-time student in the School Psychology MA/CAGS program. Before coming to WJC, I graduated from Franklin Pierce University with my BA in Psychology and minors in Forensic Psychology and Criminal Justice.

When applying to graduate programs, I was looking for a small, more intimate educational program, similar to how Franklin Pierce was. I learn best in smaller groups, and it is a plus getting to know everyone in my classes very well! I was quickly and easily able to form meaningful connections with both peers and faculty members here. I also was drawn to William James because of the strong emphasis on practicum and internship experiences. It is amazing being able to learn something in class, and quickly make a real-world connection in my school practicum site. While pursuing School Psychology was a later official decision for me (which you can tell by looking at my undergrad minors), it has always been a potential career path for me since I began college. I have always loved the idea of being a mental health professional who can help anyone in need, while also being in a warm school environment.

It can be easy to consume the identity of being a graduate student, and not identify with much else. I have found it so important during my first year to make sure I have hobbies and interests to make time for outside of school. Self-care is also something I always make time for. This can vary based on what I feel that I need. Sometimes it's a long drive with an iced coffee, and other times it may just be watching Netflix to relax. It is important to make time for yourself when it gets stressful in school.

With a good balance, grad school life is fun and exciting! Please reach out with any questions, and good luck!!
