Dr. Nicholas A. Covino, president of William James College in Newton, Mass., is a clinical psychologist, psychoanalyst, and educator dedicated to making a difference in behavioral health. His clinical career has been devoted to caring for the psychological needs of medical patients and engaging in long-term psychotherapy with adults. His research interests throughout the years have mirrored this clinical work. Covino has served as the Director of Psychology and Director of Training at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. He is a graduate of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute and a former faculty member at Harvard Medical School.
In 2002, Dr. Covino was named the second president of William James College, the largest educator of licensed behavioral health and leadership psychology professionals in New England. Dr. Covino has led William James College for more than two decades on its mission to meet the growing mental health needs especially of underserved populations. During this time the College has transformed from a single-degree institution to one of four academic departments offering nine degrees and five certificates. William James College is expanding and diversifying the behavioral health workforce by providing training to those from historically marginalized communities and support to clinicians, organizational leaders, teachers, service members, and first responders.
